What I’ve Been Up to the Past School Year - Professionally and Academically

Updated: Jan 6

I love the opportunities at UNLV! Here are all the organizations, competitions, and events in my life! This post is organized by the organizations I am part of, not by date! Everything in this post has happened from August 2022 to January 2023.

American Marketing Association

University of Wisconsin, Whitewater American Marketing Association Conference

October 2022

I was able to attend an AMA conference hosted by UWW in October. I enjoyed competing in competitions, networking with job recruiters, and meeting other AMA members from across the nation. My friend Jose and I also had a blast exploring the college town! I served on two different panels. UNLV AMA is one of the top ten chapters in the U.S. I was able to speak about our consulting team and the steps we took to become a platinum chapter. Shoutout to the students at UWW AMA for hosting such a wonderful conference!

AMA Case Competition and Weekly Meetings

September 2022 - December 2022

This was my second year on the case team. In my freshman year, the case team placed top 3 in the nation for our marketing initiative. The sponsor for the competition this year is the Wall Street Journal. My AMA case team had to come up with a marketing campaign to increase WSJ subscriptions among college students and recent graduates. The team met twice a week to complete the project. We are waiting to see if we are finalists and if we qualify to go to the International Career Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana in March! Wish us luck!

Alpha Gamma Delta

Alpha Gamma Delta Community Garden Bed

September 2022 - Present

I currently serve on the garden committee for my sorority. We are the only greek life chapter on the campus to have a garden bed at the UNLV community garden. A few of us meet weekly to weed the bed, water the plants, and check plant growth! The radishes we planted last semester turned out amazing! I’ve learned about gardening techniques through this committee and I thoroughly enjoy the activity!

Alpha Gamma Delta Director of Communications + Taking a Little

November 2022 - Present

I decided to take on a leadership position within my sorority this year! I am the Director of Communications! I am in charge of the chapter scrapbook and the weekly newsletter. I also assist the Vice President of Administration with any paperwork/administrative duties. It’s going to be an awesome year as a leader in AGD!

I also decided to take a little this semester. I asked Taya if she wanted to get dinner one night and we talked for over 2 hours! We instantly hit it off! I’m so excited she took interest in Alpha Gamma Delta and became my sister! We have a very close relationship already and I’m ready for all the memories we will make in the sorority!

Global Entrepreneurship Experience (GEE)

Cox Contender’s Challenge | Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Competition

October 2022

This was my first time competing in the Cox Contender’s Challenge. This competition is a week-long event with different challenges each day. My amazing team and I created a plan to increase DEI efforts for a fictional company in the case challenge held on Wednesday. We won first place in this challenge and I got an MVP award! GEE won first place overall in the competition!

GeoComply Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Competition

November 2022

This was another competition centered around DEI! My team created a plan to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion at GeoComply (an international cyber-security company). We won first place in the competition and took home $7,500 as a team!

National Diversity Case Competition at Indiana University, Kelley School of Business

January 2023

Over winter break, my team worked on a case challenge for 3M centered around the topic of environmental justice. Our plan was to help communities around 3M manufacturing sites suffering from pollution and chemical poisoning by improving access to healthcare services and products. We flew to Indiana University and represented UNLV in the National Diversity Case Competition. We presented a 44-page slide deck to the judges and placed in the top 4 out of 32 teams! Each team member won some money and we made our university proud!

YouChef

TechStars Start-Up Weekend

November 2022

My teammates (Allister & Vianey) and I competed at Techstars Start-Up Weekend! We are currently developing an app called YouChef. We are decreasing food waste and encouraging people to eat at home! During the TechStars Start-Up Weekend, we made a working model of the app. We won second place and the people’s choice award! We are still trying to make the app a reality! I’m super excited about what is to come!

Honors Student Council (HSC)

HSC Secretary

August 2022 - Present

I have the role of creating flyers for the Honors Student Council! I get to advertise meetings/events and help plan events for Honors College students. I enjoy working with the HSC team! I’ve been able to sing at our annual Coffee House Night, eat with students at Friendsgiving, and promote diversity at our Global Gourmet Night!

Troesch Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Troesch Scholar Journaling Workshop

November 2022

I have the opportunity of promoting entrepreneurship and innovation at UNLV! I applied to be a Troesch Scholar at the beginning of the school year. One of the things I love about being a scholar is that I get to host my own workshops. I hosted a journaling workshop in 2022 and I will be doing another one this semester! I journal every day and I love that I can share my passion with other students!

Volunteering Global Consortium for Entrepreneurship Centers

October 2022

I volunteered at GCEC and loved learning about the entrepreneurship centers at different universities. So many different professors came to speak about their research, experiences, and opportunities for students at their respective colleges.

Harrah College of Hospitality

Volunteering at CES | The Female Quotient Equality Lounge

January 2022

I loved volunteering for The FQ on January 5th and 6th. I heard about the opportunity through the Hospitality College Email List-serve. I saw the exhibits at the Consumer Electronic Show! All the concept cars, robots, and virtual reality products were awesome to observe! The FQ hosted the Equality Lounge in one of the sky suites at the Aria. These suites are typically reserved for high-roller guests only. The view from the 58th floor is epic! I networked with empowering female executives from different industries. I enjoyed the FQ’s emphasis on closing the gender pay gap and granting women equal employment opportunities!

Peer Mentor

August 2022 - Present

I am a peer mentor for the Harrah College of Hospitality. During 2022, I met one-on-one with 30 first-year students and helped facilitate a class with a graduate student! I love all of my mentees. I’m looking forward to a fun-filled semester where I attend events with mentees and continue being a resource throughout their college journey!

Helen J. Stewart Buckle Award

November 2022

I applied for the Helen J. Stewart Award back in October. The award is granted to an ambitious, female student at UNLV studying Hospitality Management. I had to show that I had involvement both in the community and on campus. I was awarded my buckle at the Las Vegas Rodeo Days at the Plaza Hotel. I got to go inside the arena where all the bull riders compete!

4.0 GPA

Fall 2022 Semester

This was a very rewarding semester! I finished with a 4.0 GPA for the semester and completed 20 credits!

What’s going to happen in Spring 2023? We will see!

With Joy,

Christen
